Landscaping Services
A person’s yard is a changing, evolving space. When designed with thought and intention, it can serve in multitudes; as a space for leisure and gathering for family and friends, a home and food source for bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects, a conservation initiative for preserving New England’s native flora and fauna, a source of inspiration to spark one’s most creative and imaginative self, and a space offering calmness and an opportunity to connect to nature right out of your own front door.
At Sundial Nursery, we design and install gardens with these ideas in mind.
We service York county in Southern Maine as well as Durham and Dover New Hampshire.

Obedient plant (Physostegia virginiana)
A native perennial in the mint family. Grows best in moist well draining soil in full to part sun. This plant has a clump forming habit, growing about 3 feet in diameter and 4 feet high. Pale pink flowers bloom from mid summer into fall.
Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica)
Needs constant moisture. Easily grown in rich moist soils, good plant choice for low areas in yards where rain puddles. Grows best in part shade. Short lived perennial, but will self seed in ideal growing conditions. Clump forming, grows to be 3 feet high and 1 foot wide. Dark blue tubular flowers attract many bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Blooms in late summer.
Rose Milkweed (Asclepia incarnata)
Also known as swamp milkweed, best grown in wet sites in full sun to partial shade. Cheerful pink blooms in early summer. Will self seed and spread in garden if seed pods are not clipped off the plant. Resistant to deer browsing. Grows to be around 4’ tall and 3’ wide.

Virginia Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum virginianum)
Best grown in consistently moist, well draining soil in dappled shade. White bell shaped flowers bloom from May to June. Grows to be 2 feet high and wide. Native to wet woodlands, found typically in ravine bottoms, low woodlands, and stream valleys.
Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)
A native perennial in the mint family, known for its lovely fragrance and intricate purple flowers. Clump forming, growing 2-4 feet high. Grows best in full sun with moderately moist soils. Native bees nest in the dead hollow stems of bergamot, so we encourage you to cut back your stems to 12-24 inches in the fall and leave them to disintegrate on their own!
Woodland Strawberry (Fragaria virginiana)
Easily grown in moist, well draining soils in full sun to part shade. A ground hugging perennial, this is a great ground cover plant for tough areas or to use as an alternative to lawns as it spreads into large colonies overtime. Flowers ripen into strawberries much smaller than cultivated strawberries.
Swamp Rose Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos)
Swamp rose mallow is tall semi-woody perennial that blooms hibiscus-like flowers from midsummer into fall. Found naturally growing in wetlands and along stream beds, this plant grows best in rich, wet soils and can tolerate consistently moist soil. Full to partial sun. It grows quite tall, getting up to 6’ in height, but can be cut back in early spring to encourage a shorter bushier form. Pollinator magnet.
Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum)
A small, tough, clump forming woodland native. Grows up to 2 feet high and 18 inches wide, but spreads through rhizomes freely. Great for naturalizing areas and for planting underneath trees where seldom other plants survive. Best grown in average, well drained soil in full sun to full shade. Saucer shaped pink flowers bloom for 6 weeks starting in the spring.
Purple Giant Hyssop (Agastache scrophulariifolia)
An upright clump forming perennial with soft purple plumes of flowers that bloom for weeks from late summer into fall. This plant is sensitive to competition, so give it space in the garden. Grows well in average soil and full sun. Can get up to 6 feet in height, but can be cut back in late spring to bring down the height and encourage a bushier habitat. Highly attractive to bees and butterflies, including the endangered rusty patched bumble bee.
